Microsoft reminded that after many years of service, the support for Windows 7 will stop by January 14, 2020. After that date, Windows 7 will no longer receive security patches.
What does that mean for you?
If you still have a PC using Windows 7, it will continue to work. However it will gradually become more vulnerable to viruses and malware. Overall, the security risks will increase overtime.
Microsoft clearly state that there will be no more technical support, software updates and security updates. We can add that there will no more bug fixes.
What can I do?
There are commonly to advises given by websites and Microsoft itself. You can upgrade your current PC to Windows 10 or you can use the opportunity to change your PC for a new one.
These solutions are most of the time relevant to your needs. However it is good to note that not all devices can run Windows 10.
The minimum required specifications to run Windows 10 are:
- Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC
- RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
- Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS or 20 GB for 64-bit OS
- Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver
- Display: 800 x 600
For a better user experience, we would advice to have twice more RAM and a storage of 128 GB minimum. If your PC is using a traditional hard drive, with low specifications, it would be advantageous to upgrade for a solid slate drive.
As you can see, costs would occur to keep your computer secure.
There is a third option, to replace your Windows 7 by a Linux OS such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc. This is not always the most comfortable option, but it will be the cheapest.
